Scholarship Opportunities

Friends of Cistercian wishing to make gifts in honor of or in memory of a friend or relative might consider donating to one of Cistercian’s many established scholarship funds.  Gifts to these endowed funds increase the principle. To support student scholarships, the School makes a 4% draw on the 3-year rolling average of the principal.

General Scholarship Fund

The Cistercian General Scholarship Fund was established for donations made in memory or in honor of someone. 

Alumni Scholarship Fund

Endowed in 2003, this fund was established with donations from Alumni Phonathon that were above the amount earmarked for current year scholarship needs.  Every year, Phonathon strives to add to this endowment.

Form Masters’ Scholarship Fund

Endowed in 2005 by a Cistercian family wishing to remain anonymous, this fund honors the unique Cistercian Form Master system and all form masters. 

The Jim and Emily Hartnett Scholarship Fund

Endowed in 2006, this fund honors Mr. and Mrs. James J. Hartnett, Sr.  Mr. Hartnett was a longtime member of the School Board and the father of five Cistercian alumni.  His support and counsel continue to guide the School.

The Bryan F. Smith Scholarship Fund

Endowed in 2003, this fund honors Bryan F. Smith, one of Cistercian’s founders and the father of five alumni.  Mr. Smith was a tireless and consistently generous supporter of Cistercian in ways too numerous to count.  Additional memorial gifts were added to this fund when Mrs. Smith passed away in 2004 and Mr. Smith in 2007. 

The Louie and Laura Tomaso Scholarship Fund

Established in 1986 and endowed in 2009, this fund honors Louie and Laura Tomaso. They are parents of an alumnus and grandparents of an alumnus and two current students.  Mr. Tomaso passed away in 2008 and is remembered today as an early and passionate supporter of Cistercian.

The Fr. Damian Szödényi Scholarship Fund

Endowed in 2003, this fund was established in memory of Cistercian’s first headmaster, Fr. Damian, who was also an accomplished artist and sculptor. 

The Fr. Julius Leloczky Scholarship Fund

Endowed in 2011, this fund honors Fr. Julius for his years of service to the School and Abbey.  It was funded primarily by the classes of 1983, 1986, 2000 and 2009 on the occasion of his 50th Anniversary of his Ordination to the Priesthood.

The Marton Scholars Scholarship Fund

Endowed in 2005 by a Cistercian family wishing to remain anonymous, this fund honors Frs. Henry and Bernard Marton, Cistercian priests, teachers, form masters, headmasters, and blood brothers. 

The Fr. Pascal Kis-Horvath Scholarship Fund

Established in 2003, this fund honors Fr. Pascal, a longtime assistant at St. Monica’s parish and a close friend of Mr. and Mrs. Ray French and their family.  Funded by Melinda French Gates through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, this fund provides scholarships for minority students.

The Fr. Roch Kereszty Scholarship Fund

Endowed in 2009, this fund honors Fr. Roch as beloved Form Master and friend.  It was funded by alumni from Fr. Roch’s five classes of 1973, 1978, 1985, 1993, and 2001.

The Hillary Award Fund

Endowed in 2004, this fund was established by Dr. Robert J. Henderson in memory of his son Seth ’03 and of Coach Tom Hillary, Cistercian’s Athletic Director and football coach from 1984 -2000.  This fund provides for the beautiful, 24” tall bronze Hillary Award and a cash award to be given annually to a “senior who has contributed significantly to multiple varsity teams at Cistercian, exhibited the values of sportsmanship, led his teammates to growth in character, and maintained a high level of academic achievement.” 

The Coach Hillary Scholarship Fund

Endowed in 2008, this second fund in memory of Coach Hillary provides scholarships for current students.  It is funded by contributions and the proceeds from the annual Tom Hillary Golf Tournament and the Homecoming Silent Auction. 

Craig Malorzo ’90 Scholarship Fund

Created in 2010, this fund was established in memory of Craig Malorzo ’90 by his classmates and friends.  At Cistercian, Craig was an avid basketball player and the social catalyst for his class.   After School, he practiced dentistry locally and is best remembered as an exemplary father and husband.  He passed away in 2009.

Ed Haller ’91 Scholarship Fund

Endowed in 2006, this fund was established by classmates and family in memory of Dr. Ed Haller ’91.  Ed was selected as a member of the “all 90’s” football team and hit the first out-of-the-park homerun at Cistercian’s new baseball field.  He passed away in 2004. 

Mark Cochran ’97 Scholarship Fund

Endowed in 2008, this fund was established in memory of Mark Cochran ’97, an engineer, photographer, and pilot.  At Cistercian, Mark won the Hawk Award by lettering in cross country, soccer and baseball his senior year, and developed the photography skills that were to make him a photographer for SMU’s student newspaper.  He passed away in 2006.

Dee Walker ’97 Scholarship Fund

Endowed in 2007, this fund was established in 1996 in memory of Dee Walker ’97.  Dedicated athlete, avid student of history, and beloved friend, Dee passed away the summer before his senior year.

Reeves Hall ’99 Scholarship Fund

Endowed in 2007, this fund was established in memory of John Reeves Hall ’99.  A gifted programmer, Reeves was the youngest alumnus to publish a book.  Programming Linux Games published while he was still a student at Georgia Institute of Technology.  Reeves was a computer programmer, a marathoner, and a pilot.  He passed away in 2005.

Seth Henderson ’03 Scholarship Fund

Endowed in 2004, this scholarship was established in memory of Seth Henderson ’03.  Seth was an honor roll student and stand-out athlete.  He received the St. Bernard Award in his Sophomore year.  He won the Hillary Award and was to walk on at UT Austin in football.  He passed away the summer after his graduation from Cistercian.

James M. Collins Service Award Fund

Established in 1996, this fund honors Congressman James M. Collins who from 1969-1983 represented the Third Congressional District of Texas, based in Irving. This fund annually provides an award for a rising senior who has shown leadership over time in voluntary service to the community.

Claudius Mayer Scholarship Fund

Endowed in 1973 by Dr. Claudius Mayer, a 1919 graduate of the Cistercian school in Budapest, this fund provides cash awards given annually “to the two most deserving seniors.”  The fund was substantially increased in 1976 when Dr. Mayer left his estate to establish a scholarship fund.

Henry and Marie W. Ohlemeyer Scholarship Fund

Established in 2006, this fund honors Hank and Marie W. Ohlemeyer.  Both close friends of the Abbey, Marie served as secretary to Abbot Anselm for many years.  They left their estate to establish a scholarship fund in the Prep School.
