1st & 2nd J.V. Victories at Austin-St. Stephen’s

The first major tournament of 2004 had a wonderful outcome when Cistercian managed to win both 1st and 2nd in the JV division of the Spartan Showdown tournament sponsored by St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin .  With 21 students competing, it was one of the largest tournaments we’ve ever entered.  Here’s a few of the highlights.

Varsity: John Davies , Adrian Bower, Robert Cenzon, and Brian Bower.  This quartet of players arrived late in Austin so that they could cheer on the CPS soccer team to a victory. However, all that late-night traveling and activity took its toll, along with John being very much under the weather with ailments including laryngitis. After dropping their first match to St. Stephen’s, they won 3 in a row to advance to the championship rounds, but were ultimately knocked out by Bellaire HS-Houston.

JV-A: Daniel Mitura , Vincent Zimmern , James Hansell , and Erik Tanner.  These guys simply had a perfect tournament.  They won every match they played, and were the ONLY JV team to score above 500 points. And, they did that twice, including a rarely seen shutout match of 530 vs. 0 [zero!] against Westside HS.

JV- B – Colin Leatherbury, Warner Sallman, Kyle Mitchell, and William Payne.  This group of 3 freshmen and 1 junior also had a great day, breezing through the prelims with a 3 – 1 record.  A misfortunate match against McKinney HS knocked them out when a German-speaking student pretty much ran away with the 60-second round for McKinney .

JV-C – Matt Hess, Kenneth Spence, Parker Graham, and Tomas Castella.  This team really did the ‘Cinderella Routine’ by working together and having a perfect 4 – 0 record in the prelims.  Matt Hess had the best tournament of his life, and Kenneth Spence was just amazing.  Tomas and Parker were always there giving the team that added answer to push them to victory.  Their only defeat: in the Championship finals against our own JV-A team.

JV-D – Peter Koutsogeorgas, Nathan Helms, James Hinckley, Stephen Chuckray, and Michael Montoya .  This team had the least amount of tournament experience and yet, they managed to pull out a respectable record of 2 – 2 and made the cut to advance to the afternoon rounds. Unfortunately, they had to play St. John ’s JV-A in the first afternoon round to be knocked out of the tournament.

Big Picture: Having an all-Cistercian championship finals in the JV division was simply great! Being able to beat excellent teams like St. John’s was only icing on the cake.

Before closing, our sincere thanks to the SUPERB parental help: Mr. and Mrs. Tanner, Mrs. Montoya, Mrs. Bower, Mrs. Chuckray, Mrs. Sallman, Dr. Mitchell, Mr. Leatherbury, Mrs. Mitura, Mr. Graham – Yes, all these parents were there! Special thanks to Mr. Graham for letting me motor down I-35 in his new car – what a dream machine!
