  • Fr. Bernard's 50th Anniversary

On August 20, the Cistercian community will gather for a very special morning! Please join Fr. Bernard Marton for Mass to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. Mass will begin at 9:00 a.m., and a reception will follow immediately after in the Abbey courtyard.

This day will provide a wonderful opportunity for us to express our gratitude to Fr. Bernard for his ministry and his service to the School. We hope to see you there!

  • Literary Club Summer Book Selection
    Saturday, August 26, 7:00 p.m.

We hope you are planning to join James Kahn '01 and Br. Francis Gruber '01 to discuss Samuel Butler's autobiographical novel, The Way of All Flesh, originally published posthumously in 1903 but written almost two decades earlier.

"Beginning with the life of John Pontifex, a carpenter, the novel traces four generations of the Pontifex family, each of which perpetuates the frustration and unhappiness of its predecessor largely as a result of parental repression. Only Ernest Pontifex, the great-grandson of John, is able to break the cycle. After being ordained a minister, serving a prison term because of a naive misunderstanding, and unwittingly entering into a bigamous marriage with the family's sluttish servant girl, Ernest providentially inherits enough money from a favorite aunt to change his life and become a writer."-- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

Andrew Kahn '95 will host the meeting in his home on Saturday, August 26 at 7:00 p.m. Don't miss an opportunity to discuss a great book with even better company!

  • An Afternoon with Fr. Bernard

Instead of our usual fall happy hour at The Old Monk, we have an opportunity to spend a little more time with Fr. Bernard before he returns to his duties in Hungary. As an added bonus, he will have copies of his book available for sale if you missed getting one during Reunions Weekend.

We will meet in the newly-renovated Guest House at the Abbey at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 27. Make plans to join us for a great afternoon! Refreshments will be served.

Space is limited, so please RSVP to Brigitte Gimenez to reserve your spot.

  • North Texas Giving Day
    Thursday, September 14

On Thursday, September 14, from 6:00 a.m. to midnight, Cistercian will participate in North Texas Giving Day which is run by Communities Foundation of Texas (CFT) with the support of The Dallas Foundation and the Center for Nonprofit Management. For the past several years, this has been an extremely successful and uplifting day for the Cistercian community, and we would love to keep that momentum going.

On this day, we will receive bonus funds from CFT for every donation of $25 or more that is made to the School through The bonus percentage will be calculated by taking the total amount of matching funds available (over $1,000,000) divided by the total amount donated to all nonprofits on North Texas Giving Day. The resulting bonus percentage will then be added to the total dollar amount given to Cistercian.

Last year, our response from current parents, alumni, and alumni parents was absolutely overwhelming with $638,141 raised from 691 donors. We received $45,195 in bonus funds because donors gave on that day!

This is an easy way to make your Alumni Scholarship Drive gift go a little further. If you have questions, please email or call Erin Hart, Director of Development, at (469) 499-5406.
