Summer Checklist for Rising Seniors

Applications

The Common Application and the ApplyTexas application portals will be open on August 1. Cistercian will host two workshops for Form VIII students, one on the Common Application and one on the ApplyTexas application, the week of August 1-5. Times and dates are yet to be determined. The goal is to fill all data fields (but not necessarily the essays) before school starts.

For many out-of-state “state universities”, the applications are unique to them, but they should be up on-line by mid to late-summer.

Standardized Testing

Once a student has completed his testing, and once he knows where he will apply, he should send his scores officially to his colleges via

http://sat.collegeboard.org/scores/send-sat-scores
http://www.actstudent.org/scores/send/

Colleges will create a file into which these scores will go far in advance of receiving an application. The first ACT after summer is on September 10.; the first SAT after summer is TBD. Registering for these sooner than later will guarantee a student’s first choice test center.

Essays

Having been introduced to the art of writing a personal narrative in English class and in the College Counseling workshop, students should be able to create multiple drafts in response to soon-to-be-posted CommonApp and ApplyTexas prompts.  Save each draft as the number and date it was written.

Transcripts

If a student needs official transcripts sent anywhere this summer, contact our registrar, Mrs. Richard.

Resume

Students should update resumes as they take on new jobs, attend camps or classes, publish articles, etc.

Service Academies and ROTC

Service academy and ROTC applications and nomination apps must be started this summer.

Athletes

If a student is considering playing sports in college (Div I, II, or III), he must register with the NCAA.

Liberal Arts College Fair

40 colleges highlighted in Loren Pope’s Colleges That Change Lives (Penguin, 2012) will host an information session on Sunday, August 14, 3:00pm at the Westin Dallas Park Central. For more information and the list of participating colleges, go to www.CTCL.org.
