The Cistercian Order
V. Cistercians in America
Cistercian life came to the
United States
as a result of religious persecution in Europe. The earliest Cistercian foundations in
America
were made by French monks of the Strict Observance seeking refuge after the anti-clerical chaos of the French Revolution. Subsequent waves of religious repression in
Europe
brought about similar American foundations in later years, and most American Trappist monasteries come from this lineage.
The Cistercian Order (O. Cist.) made its first American initiative with a foundation in
Wisconsin
in 1929, Our Lady of Spring Bank.
Hungarian Cistercians, fleeing from the Communist oppression after World War II, came to
Texas
to found Our Lady of Dallas in the 1950’s.
